How does one train prepare for an extreme
environment? * First understand the enviornment. *The Task: Climb Mt La
Malinche in May of 2000 *What will the weather condition be like? How
long will the adventchure last? How far do we plan to go over how many
days? How much weight do we plan to carry? In the case of a mountain
climb..How high is the summit?
Given these basic understandings of the
task we develop a training plan that will enable us to be able to meet these
well defined physical challenges. In the cast of our Mexico trip, Each of us
has developed a personalized training routine.
Michael Gorton: There have been times in my life
when I was an above average athlete. I have run 16 marathons, ridden my bicycle
on trips of several thousand miles and even competed in trathlons.
Nevertheless, those things are now just a memory. Because of a skiing accident
in April, I have been unable to run and consequently have been forced to train
in non-impact sports. I have done quite a bit of bicycling, spent hours on the
stair-master and on a new elliptical trainer. Am I ready for this mountain?
...well, not as ready as I'd like to be! Dr.
Brooks: I am not a world class athlete like several of the team
members but I am confident that I can make this climb, if I am careful in my
trianing. Generaly I enjoy running, swimming and biking. I injured my knees a
few years ago and now am unable to run as much as I would like, so I have mixed
my aerobic (trainning to emprove endurance) and strength. Achieve a
level of physical fitness appropriate for the task Understand the
capabilities and limits of your body and of your team.
The human body has an amazing ability to adapt to
extreme conditions. Still, only a fool wanders off to Africa to climb one of
the world's tallest mountains without understanding the level ot training
required to be successful in such an endeavor. There is very little
oxygen on the top of a mountain like Kilimanjaro and the extreme cold
temperatures can kill a man in short order.
