What is an extreme Environment? - by Michael Gorton
In our day-to-day lifestyles of air conditioning, fast & quiet cars, convenient grocery stores and comfortable beds, we are well insulated from the awesome array of environments that our Earth can demonstrate. I can recall an event some years ago when my long time friend, Dr. Byron Brooks and I decided to climb a mountain that was a few miles from his home. It wasn't a tall mountain and it wasn't particularly far. It was, however; located in the middle of the desert, and it was well over 100 degrees farenheit outside. Very soon the hike became a desperate search for shelter from the ominous heat of the sun. We found ourselves huddled under very small bushes, separated from death by a few leaves which provided shade. While this presented potential danger to our lives, we used our understanding of science and physiology to prevail. There are hundreds of different types of extreme environments on Earth. Team vAdventures will take you to many of them. On the Kilimanjaro climb, you will see what kind of training is required to take a person from the 110 Farenheit African Serengeti to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, where temperatures are140 degrees colder. On the top of that mountain, there is very little air to breath. What kind of training is required to travel in environments like that? How does one survive and prevail in an envirnment like that?

Where Are We Going?
